DENTON, Texas — If you don’t know the name Drew Mestemaker yet, you will soon.

The North Texas Mean Green are undefeated at 5-0, heading into a nationally televised matchup with ranked South Florida. But the real headline? Their starting quarterback was once sixth on the depth chart — and a walk-on.

"My thing is I just have to trust the process," said Drew. "Who would have thought a year ago I would have been in this position right now?"

Mestemaker’s journey is anything but traditional. At Vandergrift High School in Austin — a Texas football powerhouse — he didn’t play a single varsity snap at quarterback.

“He hadn't started as a full-time player since he was on the freshman B Team,” Shehan Jeyarajah with CBS Sports recalled.
