A recycling center, 92 acres of railroad tracks, new apartments and tech jobs are at the center of a debate over the future of Hazelwood.

The Pittsburgh Planning Commission on Tuesday held a hearing on a bill to rezone a portion of the neighborhood that would limit industrial land use and allow for more housing, retail and schools.

The proposal in recent months has pitted some Hazelwood residents squarely against local industrial businesses — and raised questions about the future of the neighborhood as it grows. At Hazelwood Green, a 178-acre community that has overtaken a former steel mill, a robotics facility, sports complex and new apartments are all in the works.
