Shadow communications minister Melissa McIntosh has blasted the federal government for taking more than 18 months to act on recommendations to improve the communications sector.

In March 2024, a review into a November 2023 national Optus outage passed 18 recommendations onto the federal government, aimed at addressing structural issues within the broader telecommunications ecosystem in Australia.

The government accepted all recommendations, but more than 18 months later and after an Optus triple zero failure that was linked to three deaths, legislation has finally been announced to tackle issues in the telecommunications system.
