(KRON) -- Two years ago, Hamas launched a surprise attack on a music festival in Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking hundreds of hostages, sparking ongoing retaliation by Israel.

The attack occurred on October 7 during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, marking the deadliest assault in Israel's history.

Janine Zacharia, a Stanford University journalism lecturer, described the scale of the attack as unfathomable, noting the murder of children, women, and entire families, along with more than 200 hostages taken.

Since the attack, the region's leadership has been significantly affected, with top leaders assassinated within Hamas, Lebanon, and Syria, according to Zacharia.
