ROCHESTER, Minn.--On Tuesday, a ceremony by the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office celebrated local heroes for their brave actions and dedication to community safety.

Twelve-year-old Iker Loera was honored with a Life Saving Award for his quick thinking during a critical moment at a local park. Loera's friend, 15-year-old Jayden Balk, suffered a severe injury while playing basketball. "It was scary, but I knew I had to do something. I’m just glad Jayden’s okay now," Loera said.

Loera recounted the event, describing how a normal day turned frightening when Balk tripped and hit his neck on a table corner, struggling to breathe.
