Beekeepers at the world's oldest bee sanctuary say new biosecurity measures are not enough to protect their island from a deadly parasite spreading across Australia.

Extra biosecurity measures have been announced for Kangaroo Island, off the coast of South Australia, which is home to the world's last remaining pure Ligurian bee population.

In an effort to stop the spread of the deadly varroa mite parasite, the SA government has announced it is installing early-warning sentinel hives and additional staff to check every ferry going to the island.

Varroa destructor — which can wipe out entire hives — was detected on the SA mainland for the first time last month, having already been found in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and the ACT.
