A man accused of murder was allegedly seen by two eyewitnesses to "hunt" his alleged victim "like a dog" on a rural property in Central West New South Wales, a jury has been told.

Eric Forrest has pleaded not guilty to murdering David Collisson, 53, on a property on Wilbertree Road near Mudgee on September 25, 2023.

The 34-year-old is facing a five-week trial before a Sydney Supreme Court jury.

In her opening address, Crown prosecutor Emma Blizard said while the Crown would allege Mr Forrest shot Mr Collisson, the court was unlikely to hear "definitive reasons or a motive as to why this occurred".

"It may be there are a range of possible reasons. I'll address that at the end of the trial," Ms Blizzard said.
