The City of Melbourne council is set to vote on a new plan that would see more privately owned CCTV cameras feeding into the city's security network.
The plan is part of a proposed upgrade to the council's existing security network that would see 100 additional cameras — including 40 owned by council and 60 privately owned ones — integrated into the council's already 300-camera-strong system.
About 18 privately owned cameras already feed into the council's monitoring operations, so the number of them would increase greatly under the proposal.
The privately owned cameras could include cameras that are installed by building owners as well as in "high-risk areas" such as government buildings and tobacconists.
