Imam Ayman Soliman, a chaplain at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (CCH), was detained and subsequently jailed after he appeared for a check-in at a U.S. Homeland Security office on July 9. As a result of legal action and the efforts of a large community of advocates and friends, the imam was released from jail on Sept. 19. Apparently, Homeland Security made a mistake in its hasty efforts to act without offering due process under the law.
I am gratified that Imam Soliman has his asylum status restored and is free to resume his vocation of providing spiritual care and support to families at CCH. I can’t help but wonder about and grieve for thousands of other immigrants who have been unjustly arrested and subsequently deported, or who languish in prison because they do not have legal counsel
