A beloved, former Deer Creek school bus driver was killed on Tuesday while on a morning bicycle ride. Edmond police said 75-year-old Charles Rempel was hit by a driver and died at a busy intersection.
Deer Creek school officials said Rempel retired last year after serving the district as a dedicated bus driver for a decade. Police said Rempel's tragic death is a reminder to the driving public to always be aware of cyclists.
Edmond police closed off the intersection for hours to investigate.
"Just before 7:30 we responded to an accident here at Broadway and Covell," said Emily Ward, Edmond Police Department.
Edmond police said Rempel was crossing Covell Road in the crosswalk when he was hit by a driver. Pinned under the car, police said Rempel died at the scene.
