GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A 20-year-old man was sentenced to prison for recklessly shooting a gun into a crowd and killing a teen girl riding a scooter in the process.
Josiah Tyree Pittman will serve 25-50 years in the state’s prison system on a second-degree murder charge for the death of 15-year-old La’Kyijah Williams.
La’Kyijah was riding scooters with friends on May 18, 2024, near Van Andel Arena when she was hit by gunfire.
Surveillance video showed Pittman pull out a handgun and open fire, hitting La’Kyijah. The footage also shows Pittman and others running from the scene. Pittman was arrested about four months after the shooting.
He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony firearm this August.
