The list of what the Pirates must accomplish this winter to improve their offense isn’t small. Such is life when you finish last in Major League Baseball in runs (583), home runs (117), OPS (.655) and more.
We’ll talk plenty over the coming months about what they should do via free agency, hopefully Pirates owner Bob Nutting increasing payroll and general manager Ben Cherington allocating money toward left field and third base, positions that weren’t nearly good enough.
With a plethora of young, cheap pitching and Mitch Keller set to make $16.9 million in 2026, it’s also reasonable to debate whether it makes sense to trade the right-hander and get a hitter or two in return.
What won’t be discussed as much: the internal stuff. And it’s gigantic — in at least one case, literally.
