AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Deputies say a murder suspect is in custody after a dead body was found at a local gas station.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday that it was on the scene at a Chevron at 1501 Laney Walker Blvd.

The sheriff’s criminal investigation division was there, as well as Augusta University police. The location is in Augusta’s medical district near AU’s health sciences campus.

On scene, deputies say they found a homeless person, 70-year-old Charlie Creech, dead behind the business.

He was pronounced dead on the scene just after 2:30 p.m.

Following the investigation, deputies say the case has now been upgraded to a murder investigation.
