Shillong, Oct 8: The Voice of the People Party (VPP)-led Executive Committee in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has issued notices to small-time local traders, directing them to pay professional tax to the council.

This is the first time the KHADC has taken such a step, allegedly targeting local Khasi business establishments in various villages.

The notices, issued on September 29 by the KHADC Superintendent (Professional Tax), cover a wide range of small businesses, including tea stalls, groceries, and hardware shops.

According to the notice, every person carrying on a trade, profession, or calling is liable to pay tax in respect of such trade or profession, as per the Meghalaya Profession Trades, Callings, and Employment Taxation Act.
