BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The Burlington Electric Department is warning customers about a recent surge in phone scams.

Callers claim to be from Burlington Electric and threaten to shut off power to customers unless they make an immediate payment.

The scammers then direct people to an 800 number, which has an imitation of the BED messaging system.

Burlington Electric says they never conduct business this way, and this is a scam.

They warn customers not to provide any payment or personal information over the phone.

They say if you get a call like this, hang up and report it to the Vermont Attorney General’s Consumer Assistance Program at 800-649-2424.
