The Manitoba Bar Association is firing back against Premier Wab Kinew, saying he undermined judicial independence by publicly criticizing a bail decision rendered by a provincial judge.
“The independence of the judiciary is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy. When elected officials weigh in on matters before the courts, particularly in a critical or adversarial manner, it poses a serious threat to their independence,” the association that represents the interests of Manitoba’s lawyers said in a news release Wednesday.
“Premier Kinew’s remarks undermine public confidence in the administration of justice and run counter to the constitutional principles that separate the judicial and legislative branches of government.”
