Peguis First Nation’s chief will meet with Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine after calling for the province to scrap an agreement that’s been touted as the role model for decolonizing child welfare.
“When a leader like Chief (Stan) Bird speaks up, we’ve got to pay attention,” Premier Wab Kinew said Monday at an unrelated event. “That’s why our families minister is speaking with him.”
The meeting is scheduled for next week.
The First Nation publicly called for accountability and oversight of Peguis Child and Family Services last week.
In 2023, Peguis First Nation became the first in Manitoba to assume legal control over a child-welfare agency after the federal government passed Bill C-92, an Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis Children, Youth and Families in 2020.
