Hunter Simmons is a state champion.

The Grand Junction High School senior birdied the final hole of the Class 4A State Golf Tournament at Fox Hill Club in Longmont for a one-shot victory.

He is the first GJHS golfer since Monte Montgomery brought home the title in 1987.

The ups and downs of the game will test all golfers and for Simmons coming down the stretch, he was tested to the max on the final three holes.

Holding a two-shot lead with those final three holes to go, Simmons pulled off a nearly miraculous par on No. 16 after ripping his tee shot into the trees. After chipped out, he went on to make par.

Then he agonized over a lost shot after three-putting on No. 17 for bogey.

Then he was off to No. 18 with only a precious one-shot lead.
