The Detroit Red Wings are honoring Alex Delvecchio, one of their all-time greats, this season with a No. 10 patch on the sleeves of their traditional jersey and a No. 10 sticker on their helmets on Centennial jersey nights, including their season-opener Thursday vs. Montreal.
Delvecchio died on July 1 at age 93.
Delvecchio was a smooth-skating center and three-time Stanley Cup champion who spent his entire 24-year NHL career with the franchise, from 1950-51 to 1973-74. He ranks third on the club’s all-time list for games (1,554), goals (456) and points (1,281) and fourth in assists (875).
He was an integral part of the Red Wings’ Cup-championship teams in 1952, 1954 and 1955.
