Newly appointed Climate Change boss Mike Kaiser has defended his previous involvement in the Queensland Labor party, after his history came under intense scrutiny over the first two days of Senate estimates.

Prior to being appointed to lead the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Mr Kaiser was the head of Queensland's Department of Premier under the state's former Labor government.

He was sacked by the new Liberal state government in October 2024.

Mr Kaiser was elected as a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly in 2000 but resigned a year later after admitting to an electoral fraud inquiry that he had falsely enrolled to vote in a state seat in the 1980s.

During the 1990s, Mr Kaiser was the state secretary of the Labor party's Queensland branch.
