SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - On average, more than 100 workers die every year at road construction sites.
Between 2003 and 2020, an average of 123 workers a year were killed at road construction sites nationwide, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration.
The two most common causes? Workers being struck by another vehicle and vehicles driving at high rates of speed.
This is why law enforcement are stepping up patrols at road construction sites, including in Sioux City.
“We received a lot of complaints here with the high speed, reckless driving and everything else,” explained Trooper Karen Yaneff with Iowa State Patrol. “So the troopers are out here to make sure that the construction workers are out here safe, and that they can do their job safely.”
