A law signed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday will change what food items are available in schools as part of an effort to increase nutrition standards in the state.

According to Newsom's office, he signed AB 1264, which provides a statutory definition of "ultra-processed foods" and will phase many of these foods out of school lunches by 2032. The governors office said the law, proposed by Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, D-Encino , is the first of its kind in the U.S.

The law will task state scientists with determining whether a product qualifies as an ultra-processed food (UPF) based on these factors:
