Utica, N.Y. – Jurors in the murder trial of an inmate at a Central New York prison have already heard a lot about him and the facility.

They got the chance on Wednesday to see both.

Prosecutors played several video clips for the jurors, including one showing the inmate, Robert L. Brooks, the day before he died late last year. He is seen bloodied after another inmate assaulted him.

The videos were played on the first full day of testimony in the trial in Utica.

A series of prison guards effectively turned into a gang on the night of Dec. 9, 2024, according to Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick, who is a special prosecutor in the case. They brutally attacked Brooks, he said, showing a depraved indifference toward him that ultimately led to his death.
