The Reno City Council unanimously approved an ordinance Wednesday that would allow homeowners to construct small buildings on their properties that can be rented out.
Accessory dwelling units were previously prohibited.
The ordinance had been about 2 1/2 years in the making, with the city seeking public input . The decision now was pushed along by legislation passed at the state level that goes into effect next year requiring cities and counties to allow ADUs in residential zones with certain requirements.
