FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A K-9 officer was injured Tuesday night while taking down a man accused of hitting someone in the head with a chunk of asphalt.

Police say Keon Pyant had armed himself with a large chunk of asphalt and approached a man around 8 p.m., sitting at a bus stop near Calaveras Street and Van Ness Avenue. When the man turned away, police say Pyant hit him twice in the side of the head with the asphalt.

He was treated on scene for a large laceration.

Pyant was located a short distance away by Skywatch. When K-9 Nick made contact, police say Pyant was still armed with asphalt.

According to officers, Pyant raised the asphalt towards them several times before trying to run away. Just as K-9 Nick got to him, police say he turned and hit him in the face.
