Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan has called on toll road operators to offer free travel over summer throughout the state, in a letter posted to social media.

Allan yesterday announced that public transport would be free in Victoria on weekends from early December to February 1.

That will include train, bus, and tram services.

The announcement was made in conjunction with the nearing opening of Melbourne's new Metro tunnel.

"It's our way of celebrating the opening of the Metro Tunnel and saying thanks to everyone for their patience while 7000 Victorian workers built this massive project," Allan said.

"In the spirit of our free public transport bonanza over summer, I'm asking you to join us.
