Travel on Victorian trains, trams and buses will be free every weekend from early December until February 1 next year in a move designed to coincide with the opening of Melbourne’s new metro tunnel.
Premier Jacinta Allan announced the move on Wednesday, telling reporters the free travel was being provided as a “thank you” to Victorians for putting up with the disruptions to travel during construction of what she described as the “most complex infrastructure project in our city's history”.
“We are so pleased today to be able to announce that we'll be providing free public transport everywhere for everyone every weekend, from early December through to the first of February,” Premier Allan said.
