SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — With harvest season underway, the stresses of daily life for farmers are amplified, leading to a strain on mental health.
According to the National Rural Health Association, the suicide rate among farmers is 3.5 times higher than that of the general population. Farmers often don't seek help.
"The farming community, they're more isolated," said Clinical Director at Catholic Charities, Benita Tripltt. "There is a stigma of being self-reliant, not wanting to ask for help. Fear of being judged. So, if we can get information about mental health and wellness out to the communities of farmers and families, that would be a start."
