NORTH PORT, Fla. (WFLA) — A North Port police officer quickly jumped into action to save a small child who was nearly hit by a car on U.S. 41.

North Port police said that while a sergeant was on patrol, he saw a child running down the side of the road.

"The child, who has developmental delays, wandered from their home that night, despite having safety devices in place to prevent something like this from happening," North Port police said.

A spokesperson with the police department said the child had manipulated the safeguards in the house and ran out.

In the body camera video, the sergeant is seen turning his patrol vehicle around once he spots the child.

As the child runs in the middle of the road, the video shows a car nearly hitting them.
