The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad was investigating an explosive device Wednesday discovered at a container terminal in the Port of Long Beach.
The device was found in the ground during construction work and is believed to be a possible World War II-era explosive, according to a Port of Long Beach spokesperson.

A safety perimeter was established and cargo operations at the terminal were halted.
A U.S. Marine Corps unit was called in to assist with the bomb squad investigation. The Long Beach Fire Department was also on standby near the container terminal.
The Port of Long Beach boasts six container terminals; all other terminals were operating as normal, according to officials.
