At 10 years old, there were two Janes in Jane Goodall's life.

Goodall had just read Tarzan of the Apes, the book that sparked her initial interest in Africa, and was introduced to Jane Porter — or as Goodall describes her, "the wrong Jane."

"[Tarzan's] Jane was a real wimp," Goodall said in an interview filmed in March but released posthumously on Netflix last week. She died last week at 91.

Later, another Jane emerged, Goodall said — Jane, the icon.

She recalled the first time she met this "other Jane," when a woman approached her in Santa Fe and asked to touch her. Goodall shook her hand, initially perplexed.

"This other Jane is a mystery to me," Goodall said.
