Two young Thai women were left isolated and afraid when they were robbed of their passports, threatened with deportation and forced into sex work to repay a $45,000 debt.

They finally received justice on Monday when their enslaver Rungnapha Kanbut was jailed for six years and six months after being found guilty of six offences, including intentionally possessing a slave and exercising powers of ownership over a slave.

The 63-year-old kept two Thai women as slaves for about six months after they came to Australia to live with her 20 years ago.

The women testified Kanbut took their passports when they arrived in the country and returned them only when they had each paid off the $45,000 debt she claimed, which took months.
