A pink flag flying outside the Kanawha County Courthouse this October is in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Commissioner Natalie Tennant, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, hosted a ceremony Wednesday afternoon on the courthouse steps.
Tennant talked about the importance of mammograms, which Kanawha County offers to county employees every January.
"What I ask people to do is advocate for yourself," she said. "Don't just say 'Oh, I'll catch it next time,' because we don't know when the next time is going to come around."
After Tennant was diagnosed, she called Karen Williams, coordinator for the East End Resource Senior Program . Williams was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016 despite having clear mammograms and no family history of breast cancer.
