The long-awaited new Sydney Fish Market is about to hit a major milestone with completion just around the corner, but when the public will actually be able to visit remains unclear.

Fish Market bosses are set to receive the keys next month, ahead of final fitouts, but they cannot say when the facility will open to the public.

The massive project has cost $830 million, more than triple the original cost estimate. It will boast a new seafood auction room and is expected to attract six million visitors annually.

The building was originally due to open in 2023, but delays have plagued the project throughout its development.

While fitouts continue, negotiations with tenants are still ongoing, meaning seafood shopping this Christmas might still need to happen at the old markets.
