The Madison County Special Olympics at Milton Frank Stadium is less than three weeks away, but organizers are still in need of hundreds of volunteers.

Joni Haas, chair of the track and field events committee, told AL.com that 530 athletes will be competing at the stadium on Oct. 21. She said two volunteers are needed per athlete. About 400 volunteers have signed up for the competition, which is the largest in the state.

That leaves organizers about 600 short.

Haas said volunteers are needed as escorts for participants and to help with other duties.

“We need runners, recorders, timers and people who measure the ball throw,” she said. “We have lots of opportunities. It doesn’t have to be just an escort.”
