Declan Lynch: ‘I’ve come to appreciate the budget broadcasts more, to regard the dreariness of the speeches as important in a ritualistic way’

The budget put the heart crossways in me. Or rather, RTÉ Radio 1’s coverage of it did. I was driving to the vet to collect the dog at 1pm, listening to ABBA’s Money Money Money on The Louise Duffy Show , under the impression I had a good 15 minutes to spare.
Then I heard the voice of Rachael English: “It’s the News At One on RTÉ radio.” It was a special edition of the programme, extended to cover the budget.
