PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Oregon Representative Hòa Nguyễn passed away Thursday morning at the age of 41 after a battle against cancer, state officials confirmed.
The eldest daughter of Vietnamese refugees who settled in Louisiana, Nguyễn moved to Oregon at 15, where she attended St. Mary's Academy before getting a sociology degree at Portland State University.
After graduating, Nguyễn worked in schools, including Roberts Elementary School, where she helped create their Walking School Bus program to help ensure students had a safe way to school every day.
She also served on the David Douglas School District Board and worked with the Clackamas Education Service District.
Nguyễn was elected to represent Oregon's 48th district, which covers East Portland to Damascus, in 2022 and 2024.
