PAGE, N.D. — A combine driver was killed after a collision with a BNSF train in rural Cass County.

According to Facebook posts from the North Dakota Highway Patrol and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the combine was traveling south on 133rd Avenue Southeast, between 16th and 17th streets southeast, about five miles northwest of Page, when it collided with the front locomotive of a westbound BNSF train at approximately 10:59 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9.

The impact caused the lead locomotive to catch fire, and approximately 20 train cars derailed, spilling cargo into nearby fields, law enforcement officials said.

The combine driver died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The train’s engineer and conductor escaped without injury before the fire.
