BISMARCK — North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread is urging Congress to act quickly on health care subsidies that help thousands of residents afford coverage.
The issue is central to the current federal government shutdown. In just weeks, the Affordable Care Act’s open enrollment period begins on Nov. 1.
"If those tax credits expire, tens of thousands of North Dakotans could see their premiums spike," Godfread said.
The ACA’s premium tax credits reduce the cost of health insurance for people who buy plans through the federal marketplace, including farmers, ranchers and small business owners.
Godfread gave an example: "Let’s say you’re paying $800 a month for your health insurance. Without those tax credits, those costs could skyrocket to nearly $2,000 a month."
