HOUSTON — A leader of Houston's LGBTQ+ community is blasting Gov. Greg Abbott's order to remove the rainbow Pride crosswalks in Montrose or risk losing state and federal funding.

The governor issued the directive on Wednesday, ordering "all local jurisdictions to ensure roadway markings align with federal and state traffic control and safety regulations."

We've learned that the governor's order came in response to a letter from the U.S. transportation secretary in July that ordered states to remove political or artistic messages from intersections. Governors were given 60 days to comply.

METRO said late Wednesday that it will re-stripe the intersection at Westheimer and Taft to bring it into compliance with federal design and safety standards.
