In 2018, the door opened for survivors of historical child sexual abuse in Western Australia to seek justice, when time limits were removed for them to seek legal action.
Now it seems the criteria for walking through that door may tighten again.
Dion Barber's case against the State of Western Australia was the first to proceed to judgement since the time limit was removed, and he was awarded a record $2.85 million compensation by the District Court.
But now the WA Government is appealing that amount.
Since news broke of the appeal this week, the state's premier, treasurer and attorney-general have reiterated three main talking points : Mr Barber suffered immensely, he courageously stepped forward to tell his story, and he deserves every penny's worth of justice awarded to him.
