A shocking detail has emerged about the events that led to the killings of two on-duty police officers and another being injured in north-east Victoria.

Alleged gunman Dezi Freeman is accused of murdering Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, 59, and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart, 35, after officers attended his residence at Porepunkah on August 26.

Freeman remains at large after fleeing in the remote area despite a massive police operation to try and locate the self-declared sovereign citizen.

A third officer was also seriously injured in the horrific incident, and it has now been revealed by The Herald Sun that Freeman allegedly tried to shoot a fourth officer that day.
