WISCONSIN (WFRV) - Governor Tony Evers, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and the Wisconsin Department of Tourism celebrated the 50th anniversary of the state's first Rustic Road on Thursday.
The first Rustic Road was at Timms Hill County Park in Ogema, near Rustic Road 1 in Taylor County. The road was designated in 1975 as a five-mile unpaved stretch of road, which officials say embodies the program's desire to preserve the state's scenic and lightly traveled back roads.
These roads are commonly enjoyed by bikers, hikers, travelers and of course, motorists. Gov. Evers said the program is an extension of the commitment to ensure proper infrastructure for safe arrivals and departures and expressed gratitude for statewide program support.
