A fruit-growing company in northern Victoria has pleaded not guilty and will stand trial over the death of a truck driver who was found unresponsive in a coolroom in 2023.

Mario Scapin, 50, was found unresponsive in a low-oxygen coolroom in Shepparton in March 2023.

WorkSafe charged Goulburn Valley Independent Packers (GVIP) Storage Pty Ltd in December last year for failing to ensure a workplace under its management or control was safe.

The company faces two charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

A two-day hearing in the Shepparton Magistrates' Court heard from seven witnesses, including police, company directors and a WorkSafe inspector.
