MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Common Council is considering a new ordinance that would restrict the sale of hemp-derived THC products to individuals 21 and older. The proposal aims to establish local regulations in the absence of federal and state laws.

"THC sales are a bit of the Wild West. There really is no federal law. There is no state-level law, and so municipalities are taking action," said District 5 Alder Regina Vidaver.

Vidaver sponsored the proposal, which includes rules on signs, notices, and displays. It would require shops to post a sign in each area where hemp products are sold and to display these products behind a sales counter to prevent direct access without employee assistance.

Another focus of the ordinance is the proximity of retailers to youth-serving facilities.
