FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A large portion of Highway 99 in Fresno is back open to traffic after a major oil spill.

The California Highway Patrol says it's not known what caused the spill or who is responsible.

Southbound Highway 99 was closed from Ashlan to Jensen Avenue at the time.

The highway reopened about 12:30 am Friday.

The CHP says cars were spinning out due to a lack of traction from the oil.

Fresno Fire Hazmat says the oil was not flammable or combustible.

Caltrans workers also put down absorbent material and sand.
