Hundreds of undocumented college students in Oklahoma are now facing steep tuition hikes after a federal judge ruled that the state’s policy allowing them to pay in-state tuition is unconstitutional.
The decision comes after a legal challenge filed jointly by the U.S. Department of Justice and Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond. The ruling forces universities to revoke a longstanding policy that had made college more accessible for undocumented students in the state.
One University of Oklahoma student, who asked not to be identified for safety reasons, said she moved to the U.S. at age eight and has lived in Oklahoma most of her life.
“My friends are here, my family’s here,” she said. “Oklahoma’s my home.”
Now a junior studying psychology, she was forced to drop out this semest
