The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office has a K-9 in every high school where deputies serve as school resource officers.
The K-9s play a role in keeping students and staff safe, the Iredell County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
With the newest addition of K-9 Chief and his handler deputy Antonio Lawrence at West Iredell High School, the sheriff's office K-9 unit continues to expand. Chief is certified in detecting narcotics and trailing, skills that are valuable in a school environment, the release said.
This newest K-9 was made possible through the sheriff's office's partnership with Iredell-Statesville Schools. The K-9s help with school safety and build positive connections between students and law enforcement, the release said.
"Their presence often helps students feel more co
