The Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas has gone into effect, the Israeli military says.

It went into effect at midday, local time (8pm AEDT) on Friday.

"Since 1200, IDF troops began positioning themselves along the updated deployment lines in preparation for the ceasefire agreement and the return of hostages", the Israeli military said.
