The opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has said it has not yet received a letter from one of its members, Alex Major, calling for a general meeting.
According to Major, MCP leader Lazarus Chakwera is required to convene the meeting in accordance with the party’s constitution, which states that unless a party leader is re-elected for another term, they should not continue to lead the party.
The party’s Deputy Press Secretary, Ken Msonda, said that if it is true that Major wrote the letter, he respects his right to express his views.
Msonda also appealed to party supporters to remain calm and patient during what he described as a difficult period following Dr. Chakwera’s recent defeat in the leadership election.
Major has given Chakwera 14 days to call for the meeting.
